Grandpa Joe’s love and dedication to family was a constant his entire life. Grandpa’s presence and love was always felt at holidays, birthdays, graduations and vacations to Cape Cod.
His encouragement and advice to always dedicate ourselves to schoolwork, careers and family are something I will carry with me the rest of my life. Even more of a mark will be the many lessons that Grandpa taught Dad that were passed onto Matthew and me.
Caitlin and I will always remember the excitement of Grandpa and Grandma in 2020 when we spent time with them in Walden shortly after our wedding. His and Grandma’s loving marriage of 70 years will always be something we look upon fondly and strive to match.
We love you, Grandpa.

Grandpa,
You and Grandma were instrumental in our childhood; whether that be babysitting, joining us on family vacations, coming to our sporting events, or holidays. You always quietly and humbly taught us valuable life lessons and I’m grateful we were able to share a lot of our childhood with you.
My earliest memories are playing the card game of “war”, which was simply who put the higher card down each flip… The fact you got me to sit still for 30 seconds seems like a miracle in and of itself but it also showed your genuine interest in spending time with us when you could have been doing anything else.
That same genuine interest was felt later on in our lives as you’d ask how work was going or how Kim and Charlie were doing. Kim always talks about the time you walked the property in Walden with her, showed her the neighbor’s honey bee farm and explained the history of the houses up there.
I’ll always remember your voice when you answered the phone, “Josephhh”, and the same with a slightly different tone as you’d inevitably catch me doing something inappropriate at the far other end of the dinner table. No matter how far away you were sitting you had an eagle eye that saw all.
The head of the table will always be your seat.
You were a gentle giant. I’ll always remember your big mitts and the time as a kid I was hiding in the garage of our rental house in LBI when you reached in the window to try and grab me… I’ll never forget looking up and seeing your hands coming in at me like “the claw”.
I never heard you raise your voice but your voice always carried the loudest. That’s the ultimate sign of respect.
You shaped family holidays and cemented core memories and traditions that I hope to continue and pass on. I know you’re watching over us and I can’t wait to see you soon.
Love you, Grandpa.
Joseph

Grandpa,
You had a way of making everyone feel special. You taught me the importance of family.
I'll never forget our talks, especially about the Yankees or Jets. We usually discussed players we didn't like and why the coach should be fired, but we always found a way to laugh about it.
Rest in peace, Grandpa. I will miss you.
Love,
Matthew

Dad,
I will never forget your smile and gentle manner as you welcomed me into the Nemia Family. We shared wonderful and challenging times, but you were always there for Frank, me, and the boys, even when it meant a trip over the equator to Chile.
Frank and I will continue to share all you taught us with our boys and keep your lessons of a life well-lived in our hearts.

Grandpa,
I can’t put into words how much I will miss you. Thank you for the 28 years of memories that I will cherish forever. Some that I’ll never forget are you coming to my school on Veterans Day, going Yankees games, every game of crazy eights and the same lines we used to say “you go, you go” “two two” “diamonds are a girls best friend” etc., and all of the Thanksgivings and Christmas holidays spent together.
You were a strong presence. Always the head of the table. Quiet, but probably because you couldn’t hear us ;). You had a big smile and your laugh was infectious. As I keep thinking about you, I can see you greeting me, bending down with arms wide open and saying “Jamie!”
A man of faith and a man of principle. I am starting to understand where I get my stubborn ways from. You had so many amazing qualities that I strive to mirror in my life. Thank you for being the role model that you were.
I’ll miss talking to you about the Yankees, telling you about what’s going on in my life, and learning more about yours. I can’t wait to tell future generations about you.
I love you, Grandpa. Talk soon.

Grandpa,
I will dearly miss you. You gave me comfort in being a quiet and contemplative person. You showed me that listening is often more important than speaking. You taught me not to let the highs get too high or the lows too low. Your patience and humility were qualities I’ve always admired and strive to emulate every day. You’ve been my role model, and I’m forever grateful to have had you in my life.
I will miss calling you to analyze the Yankees’ needs or to commiserate about the Jets’ struggles. I will miss looking down the table at holiday dinners and seeing you quietly listening to the conversation, smiling, and laughing now and then. Mostly, I will cherish the memories: you and Grandma speaking in Italian when you didn’t want us to know what you were talking about, hitting the telephone wires in the hot air balloon in Steamboat, watching us swim in the pool or play football outside in Walden, and, of course, you always falling asleep at the end of the couch in Wilton while watching Yankees games.
One of my favorite memories is from when we were young, and you and Grandma were babysitting us for the weekend. I came home from a birthday party with a toy dart gun. I tried to surprise Joseph by shooting him, but he ducked, and the dart hit you squarely in the glasses, suctioning to the lens. I ran upstairs crying, afraid I had upset you. But instead, you laughed, came upstairs, and gave me a hug.
Love you forever,
Peter

Dad’s Eulogy at Funeral Home
Today, we gather to honor the life of a man who was, in every sense, a gentle giant.
Our dad truly embodied the virtues of the Corinthians passage and the definition of what love is : he was patient, kind, and never boasted.
A man of principle: He lived a life marked by quiet strength, a man who rarely raised his voice but whose presence was felt deeply by all who knew him.
He was a man for others. Whether as a loving husband, a devoted father, or a doting and involved grandfather, Dad’s love was constant.
He had a unique way of showing care. He’d always ask how his grandchildren were doing, genuinely interested in the details of their lives. In his eyes, their happiness was a reflection of his own.
Though his voice was seldom loud, when he spoke with authority, you listened. And if he raised his voice in frustration, you knew to pay attention. It was a reminder of the deep care he had for all of us — he didn’t speak to hear himself, but because he wanted what was best for his family.
Dad’s culinary skills were a marvel. Sushi, prepared with the precision of a skilled surgeon, was something to behold . And at Christmas no one could make octopus salad or toast the semolina bread perfectly like he could . He had an innate understanding of food, long before it was trendy. He was an early adopter of the “farm-to-table” movement and insisted on reading food labels, determined to avoid anything processed. He believed in simplicity, in honesty, in nourishment. I remember him saying, “If we were perfect, we wouldn’t be here.” A reminder that none of us are, but we should try our best.
He took being a child of the depression to a new level… saving things, like the string on an Italian pastry box. “You never know when you might need it,” he’d say.
His meticulousness was evident in everything he did — from pre-work inspecting of our dress shirts for frayed cuffs to making sure your shoes were shined. It wasn’t about perfection; it was about care, attention, and respect for what we have and how to represent.
Dad’s wisdom was also evident in his life experiences. During the Depression years he worked odd jobs as a young boy, selling shopping bags outside stores and counting jelly beans to put into small bags. As a young man, he worked as a security guard at night down on the docks of Brooklyn. Later, in his career as a bank executive, he earned the respect of everyone he worked with, not just for his intelligence but for his character.
Dad’s love for sports — especially the NY Yankees… thank you and, incredibly, the New York Jets no thank you — was legendary.
Even in his later years, he’d watch games with my Mom with the same passion he’d shown in everything else.
Above all, Dad was a man of integrity, a man of faith, and a man of family. He was married to Mom for 70 years, a partnership built on mutual respect, love, and unwavering commitment. He revered his mother, and in so many ways, we saw the kindness and respect he had for others come from her example.
As we say goodbye to him today, let us remember the lessons he taught us — not through grand speeches, but through the way he lived. A life that was thoughtful, measured, and full of quiet acts of love. He was a man who didn’t force anything, who believed in the goodness of life, and who lived with the unwavering certainty that kindness and patience would always carry us further than anything else.
Dad, you have touched our lives in more ways than we can express. You were our foundation, our guide, and our greatest supporter. We will carry your wisdom with us, and we’ll try our best to live up to the example you set.
Rest in peace, Dad. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Dad,
You were my rock, my support and my mentor. We had a special bond as father and daughter but also as teacher and student. You taught me how to be a better person in so many ways.
I will miss that infectious smile and the strength of your grip when you held my hand. Your hugs made me feel safe and secure.
The memories we made over the years will live forever in my head and heart.
Love you,
Susan
